ROCK ON

Le gars pour qui j'ai fait ce picto s'appelle Rochon. Durant un compétion de footbag aux États, les anglais qui essayait de prononcer son nom en on fait ROCK ON. Ça lui a collé tout de suite.

The guy for whom i did this picto, his name is Benjamen Rochon. During a footbag competition in the States, some anglophone trying to prononce his family name came up with ROCK ON. That nick name had sticked right away.

Avec la première, j'ai essayé de rendre les couleurs en applat en utilisant l'effet "posterize" de photoshop pour ensuite refaire le contour des formes.

On the first one. i used the posterize effect in photoshop, then i simplified the contours of the main shapes.

Je viens d'acquérir un scanner grand format (11"X17"). Maintenant je peux scanner mes fusains en 4 ou 6 séquences et en faire l'assemblage avec le logiciel de stiching de microsoft "ICE".

I just acquired a grand format scanner (11X17) It's really great to scan my large charcoals. It still takes 4 to 6 scans to get it all but with Microsoft ICE for stiching (it's free by the way) the process is quite easy.

Voilà les deux premier logo/picto en version finale pour des avatar de membres de mon club de aki-Filet (semblable au volleyball, mais qui se joue seulement avec les pieds). J'ai l'intention d'en faire un pour chacun des membres, ce qui va m'amener à une vingtaine de pictos.

Here's the two first logo in final version, that i create for avatars. I'm going to do a serie of them, one for each member of my footbag net club (kind of like volleyball but using the feet only). That will make about 20 of them.

J'ai joué rapidement avec un fusain dans photoshop. J'explore ces temps-ci la coloration avec des textures, d'utiliser ces texture pour faire vibrer la couleur. C'est un peu compliqué à expliquer mais jusqu'ici cette nouvelle approche fonctionne bien, ça donne un petit côté retro dans le dessin et dans la couleur je trouve.

Je viens de voir des images au fusain que j'avais fait pour mon expo d'août 2009 mais que je n'avais pas présenté. Avec le recul je les trouve pas si mal.

I just saw some charcoal image i did for my exhibition in august 2009 that didn't made the cut. More than 6 month later i do find them not that bad to look at.

I don't know much about the story but i did hear the music from allan Parson alot... a long time ago.

Ça c'est un test. J'ai utilisé du papier vellum pour dessiner au plomb. C'est plus facile de faire des dégradés et ça donne une texture plus fine que que mon autre papier.

J'étudie beaucoup ces temps-ci quelques maîtres en illustration de la fin du 19eme siècle, dont Edmund Dulac et Harry Clarke. à regarder ce dernier je me suis mis à pratiquer à faire des motifs. C'est assez intéressant comme exercice. Ensuite j'en ai profité pour faire une carte de fête.

I've been studying some 19s illustration master Edmund Dulac and Harry Clarke. That last one has a very decorative style, that inspired me to explore doing motif. In a sense anything there is to be seen is a sort of motif or has some in it for example a tree without leaves, there's a pattern, never exactly the same but same kind of rythme. By doing some random pattern i could see some resemblance with some realistic ones. I've done those in a bus and it was shaky. In a way it worked too not to be stable to draw!

J'ai commencé à participer à un club de dessin où on a un thème à illustrer par deux semaines environ. Space trucking était le thème précédant. C'est finalement assez plaisant d'illustrer un thème imposé.

I started to participate to an illustrator club where you get to illustrate a theme every two weeks. Space trucking was the previous theme. I'm having fun to draw with an imposed theme.

Bon finalement je ne suis pas sûr que c'est mieux que la dernière version mais je suis tout de même content. Si c'était à refaire j'irai entre les deux plus controlé que l'ancien et plus gestuel que ce dernier surtout dans le personnage.

So finally i'm not sure that the last one is better. I gain some details but i kind of lost some freedom in the skieur over the prior version.

J'ai décidé de me faire une série d'images au fusain avec des thèmes un peu générique qui ferait très poster. Le thème d'une affiche de ski était tout désigné comme premier test.

I decided start a serie of images using charcoal with some generic theme that would look very poster like. A skiing theme was perfect as a first test.

J'aime de plus en plus travailler au fusain. Je peux travailler en collage comme dans ce cas-ci où le ciel, l'arrière plan et le sujet principal ont été dessiné séparément. Aussi avec l'ordi, la coloration peut-être pas mal intuitive.

I like more and more working with charcoal. With the computer i can work like with a collage. Here i did the cloud, background and foreground separately. I really enjoyed playing with the color here.

Je viens tout juste de recevoir mon projecteur que j'ai acheté sur Ebay. C'était devenu indispensable si je voulais travailler en proportion quand j'aggrandi mes sketches en grand format sur mon papier.

I just received my projector i bought on Ebay. I had to get one in order to be able to keep my sketch in proportion when working in large format. It work great!

Un peu avant les fêtes je me suis remis à faire un peu de fusain. En fait je m'étais promis de faire un portrait de Vangogh pour mon ami et agente Lise. En fait j'aurais du le faire il y a 3 ou 4 mois mais j'étais comme bloqué. Tout en m'échauffant, j'ai fait un peu d'abstrait. J'ai bien aimé l'expérience.

A bit before the holidays, i went back to charcoal. I wanted to make a portrait of VanGogh for my friend and agent Lise. I was supposed to do it 3-4 month ago but was kind of stucked and i was procrastinating about it. While warming up, i tried myself at abstract images. I have to say that i did enjoy it...
